The Height='*' tells the rows to fill up any remaining space that the grid can occupy.

if your ContentPanel will contain only the grid and no other items, then you can set its orientation to horizontal (so new items will be stacked horizontally, and therefore its width will be not limited, but its height will) and change the rowdefinitions.

Having a grid's height stretch to fill its parent's height which is undetermined will not work. Limited and can go on forever (its width is not). This means that new items added to it will be stacked below the current items and the stackpanel will stretch its height to fit those new items.
